Choosing A Rehabilitation Center ? What Factors To Consider?

Relapse Records

What factors should you consider when choosing a treatment center for an addict? The idea of enrolling a family member in an addiction center may cause many emotional issues in the family. Some persons may be in favor of allowing the person to keep his or her place in the family even as the treatment is in progress. However, chances of the person suffering a relapse is very high if he or she is encouraged to live in the same environment in which addiction occurred. A change of place and a change of environment is very important.

Many persons choose addiction centers as if they are choosing a hotel for holiday. Basic facilities and amenities must be there but one must focus on the rehabilitation process and the treatment process before focusing on any other reason. If the treatment is not holistic and if the rehabilitation is not good enough, chances of the person suffering a relapse will automatically increase. Remember, tackling a relapse is always going to be tougher as compared to the initial rehabilitation process. The best option is to choose a center that combines the physical, mental and spiritual solutions to make the problem go away permanently.

It is also important to consider the cost of treatment. Bringing the family to bankruptcy just to treat the person may leave the addict full of guilt. The rehabilitated person may seek drugs once again to get rid of the guilt of having cost the financial downfall of the family.

We all know that drinking alcohol in large quantities can cause adverse health issues. Well-known issues included liver disease and car accidents. However, these are not the only conditions or issues that can arise from drinking. Professionals have identified at least 60 diseases that are linked to drinking alcohol.

Here are just a few conditions that are liked to heavy alcohol consumption:

–Cancer. According to researchers the risk of cancer rises in those that habitually consume alcohol. Cancers linked to alcohol include throat, liver, breast and colorectal, among others.

–Heart diseases. Heavy alcohol consumption and especially binge drinking causes blood platelets to bind together causing clots. These clots can then lead to stroke or heart attacks. Alcohol can as cause the heart muscles to weaken and fail, in addition to causing heart arrhythmia and fibrillation.

–Anemia. Drinking may cause the reduction of red blood cells and symptoms of anemia include shortness of breath and fatigue.

–Cirrhosis. Because alcohol acts as a toxin in the liver, it can cause cirrhosis. Cirrhosis causes the liver to develop scar tissue and may completely shut the liver down. Women seem to be especially prone to developing cirrhosis.

–Depression. It’s a well-know fact that depression and drinking are counterparts. No one is really sure which causes the other. However, some research indicates that once the drinking stops, the depression stops as well.

–Dementia. We know that as people get older their brains shrink. However, drinking causes this shrinkage to speed up. This may cause memory loss and dementia. It can also lead to the inability to make decisions, solve problems and other higher-order brain functions.

–Seizures. Heavy alcohol consumption can cause or trigger epileptic episodes and can cause seizures in people who do not have epilepsy. Alcohol can also inhibit the effects of epilepsy medication.

A Look at Sexual Addiction

Sexual addition is not generally thought of when discussing or investigating addition and substance abuse; however, it affects thousands of Americans and can be just as serious as a substance or alcohol addiction.

Sexual addition is a condition wherein a person exhibits an unusually high sex drive or experiences sexual obsessions. The sex addict thoughts and thinking pattern are dominated by thoughts of sex, and in turn makes engaging in everyday life and personal relationships difficult.

These people often have thinking distortion and can often justify and/or rationalize their behavior, often blaming others for their actions. They also are in a state of denial and make excuses for their behavior and how it affects those around them.

This type of addiction is generally associated with risk or thrill seeking. People with sexual addition will engage in different forms of sex, even knowing that there are risks for dangerous and negative consequences. These behaviors not only damage the addict’s relationships, personal and profession, he or she is at risk for injury — emotional and physical.

Sexual addiction can make the addict engage in activities that are illegal, including exhibitionism, placing obscene phone calls and even engaging in molestation.

There are several behaviors that are associated with sexual addiction including:

–Many affairs outside of the relationship
–Anonymous sex with many partners
–Engage in unsafe sex
–Engaging in phone or cybersex
–Hiring prostitutes or engaging in prostitution
–Uncontrollable masturbation or self-stimulation

As with many other addictions, the sex addict will usually be in denial and reluctant to accept treatment until faced with an event that makes them realize there is a problem. This can include the break up of a relationship or job loss. Treatments include education, counseling, support groups and 12-step programs, including Sex Addicts Anonymous. Medication may also be used in some cases.

The Growing Need for Prescription Drug Rehabilitation Services

Drug abuse and addiction used to be a “street” problem. When someone talked about an addict or an individual in need of drug rehab, he or she was usually referencing a user of illegal drugs like cocaine or heroin. Now, we are seeing more and more people checking into prescription drug rehab programs.

The face of drug abuse has changed. Today, prescription drug abuse and addiction are serious, growing problems that is spreading all over the world.

The extent of the epidemic is readily visible in the way young people are dealing with prescription drugs. A recent National Center on Addiction and Substance Abuse study determined that nearly one-third of all US teenagers have almost immediate access to mood altering prescription drugs. Respondents reported that they can obtain prescription medications more easily than they can purchase a six pack of beer.

Meanwhile, those with legitimate prescriptions often fail to secure or supervise their drug supplies. Physicians, particularly with ear-nose-throat and orthopedic practices, continue to prescribe mood-altering drugs in record numbers. The legality of the drugs themselves makes abuse less likely to attract the attention of law enforcement. As such, it is not surprising that street drugs are suddenly taking a back seat to prescriptions in many areas.

Those who are directly involved in offering assistance to those suffering with drug dependency problems are focusing on ways to better deal with the challenges of prescription drug abuse as they strive to meet their clients’ needs.

The influence of factors encouraging the improper use of prescribed medications is leading prescription drug rehab programs to anticipate and to prepare for continued growth. They are already seeing more people in need than ever before and there is little reason for them to believe that a decrease in demand for prescription drug rehab services is on the horizon.

First a Health Physical and then Auto Insurance for Kids

Back-to-school time often means back to the doctor for a yearly checkup for many kids. The yearly physical is an important part of health medicine for growing kids. This is often the only time throughout the year that many kids see the doctor, barring any problems along the way. Health medicine topics such as overall health, hearing, vision and so forth should be addressed thoroughly at this once a year visit.

When taking a child to the doctor for a check-up, it is a good idea to let them know what will be happening. This is especially helpful for kids who have not had to address any health medicine issues throughout the year. They may not know what to expect from the doctor visit and be a bit apprehensive. Set their minds at ease by telling them a few things that will happen at the doctor’s office.

Health medicine check-ups are typically easygoing doctor visits. First, the nurse will call the child and parent back to the treatment area. Once there, the nurse will check vital statistics such as weight, height, blood pressure and usually temperature as well. The numbers for all of this will be noted in the chart for the doctor to take a look at when he or she comes in. Since this is a yearly health medicine checkup, it is likely that vision and hearing will be tested on a quick basis as well. If there are concerns, they will be investigated further with appropriate eye or ear doctors or specific treatments.

Once pertinent information is charted, the doctor will come in and check things over. Children grow up fast; soon it will time to consider auto insurance. The health medicine doctor will say hello and talk to the child, being sure to put them at ease as much as possible. After checking the chart, listening to the child’s heart and lungs and feeling the belly area, the doctor will complete the health medicine exam in short order.

In Baltimore Medical Malpractice Help is Just a Call Away

Medical malpractice is a growing concern in our society. The Hippocratic Oath does not stop greedy medical practitioners from engaging in dubious, even criminally harmful practices; it just makes them hypocrites. Even with elective procedures like plastic surgery, medical malpractice cases abound. The overuse of laser therapy that leads to cancer, post-op deformities, negligence during surgery, and prescribing harmful medications can prompt medical malpractice claims against doctors.

If you or your loved one has been impacted by negligence or malpractice, help is available, no matter where you live in the U.S. For example, in Baltimore medical malpractice help is just a call away; all you have to do is get in touch with a good lawyer, describe your case, come up with some proof, and you’ll have all the zeal of the law behind you in a fight against doctors, plastic surgeons, or any other medical care providers who failed to do their job. However, keep in mind that some states have placed fairly low limits on malpractice liability as a result of pressure from lobbyists for doctors.

Plastic surgery is one field of medicine that’s gaining in popularity by leaps and bounds. Especially for women, plastic surgery is becoming more widely available. The ever popular pursuit of youthfulness has found a zealous advocate in the plastic surgeon. However, not all plastic surgeons are as careful or as concerned about a patient’s welfare as they should be. The result is medical malpractice.

There have been horror stories of people going for an innocuous plastic surgery procedure and coming out permanently disabled, critically ill, or even dead. Society needs to diligently hold accountable those who put profits above the health and welfare of patients. Although malpractice in plastic surgery is a relatively rare thing, it is a growing phenomenon that needs careful legislative attention.

Pakistan Plans to Open Drug Treatment Facilities for Impoverished Addicts

Arbab Muhammad Zahir, the Federal Minister for Narcotics in Pakistan has stated that his department intends to set up drug addiction centers in several cities around the country. The centers will focus on providing free or low-cost treatment to addicts who cannot afford to pay for services provided by most privately owned facilities.

There are already a few non-governmental organizations in Pakistan that receive federal funding to treat drug addicts. These facilities, however, do not have the resources needed to treat the growing numbers of addicts living in Pakistan. Model Addiction Treatment and Rehabilitation Centre of Chat Shahzad, for instance, can only treat 45 patients at a time. This public sector NGO currently has about 1200 addicts waiting for treatment. In the meantime, would-be patients have little chance to secure the treatment that they need to overcome addiction and reform their lives.

The creation of several federally funded drug and alcohol treatment facilities would certainly help alleviate this problem. Zahir’s announcement, therefore, has received a happy reception from most facilities working in the public sector.

It is unlikely that the new government-run treatment facilities will have any effect on the private centers currently operating in Pakistan. The vast majority of potential patients who would use the free and low-cost services cannot afford to pay for private counseling.

Establishing a larger number of affordable and free drug and alcohol treatment centers in Pakistan could help reduce the amount of crime and social turmoil that often occurs because of addiction. While some individuals might dislike spending federal money on drug addicts, the fact of the matter is that providing treatment to poor addicts could create a more stable society that will benefit everyone.

Individuals who do not want their tax dollars supporting drug and alcohol recovery programs should, for instance, consider how much money is spent every year in pursuit of criminals who commit crimes to pay for drugs. Furthermore, reducing the number of drug users who desperately need money to pay for their addictions will essentially “clean up the streets” and create a safer environment for everyone in Pakistan.

Documentary Focuses on Prescription Drugs in Broward County

A recent Vanguard documentary by Mariana van Zeller explores the effects that loose prescription drug laws in Broward County, Florida have on the local population and areas as far away as Kentucky. In the short film, van Zeller follows a drug addict as he shops around for doctors who will supply him with pain killers. It’s a surprisingly easy task in Ft. Lauderdale, where doctors are not required to keep a data base of the patients for whom they write prescriptions.

Van Zeller also talks to several men hanging around outside of a pain clinic. They openly talk about their experiences with the Oxycontin Express, a name given to the corridor that makes it relatively simple for drug dealers and addicts to take prescription meds from Broward County all the way to Appalachia.

A Kentucky sheriff also discusses his experiences busting addicts. He has found that the vast majority of prescription pills abused in his area come from south Florida. Despite his pleas to Florida officials, they have no interest in changing their prescription drug laws.

This is an interesting documentary that is certainly worth watching. You learn a lot about how laws influence drug behavior. Van Zeller’s film is even more interesting when one considers recent news that Ft. Lauderdale and St. Petersburg have more prescription drug related deaths than any other cities in Florida.

According to a recent article in the Miami Herald, a large number of deaths have resulted from a new trend that involves mixing prescription pain killers with illegal drugs like heroin and cocaine. The mixture of opiates and narcotics is exceptionally more dangerous that using either category of drug on its own.

As van Zeller’s documentary shows, this problem probably won’t stay sequestered in south Florida. The Oxycontin Highway makes it all too easy for drug trends, as well as drugs, to travel up the East Coast into other parts of the country. This could mean that increasingly dangerous drug use trends will begin appearing in states such as Virginia, Kentucky, North and South Carolina, and Virginia.
